How it works

You pick a file
The file is read by the page itself. It is never uploaded, which is what makes this usable for something you have just downloaded but do not trust yet.

The digest is computed locally
SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 are produced through the browser’s Web Crypto implementation.

Compare against the published value
Paste the checksum the publisher listed and check it character for character against the one shown here.

Practical guidance

A matching digest tells you the file is byte for byte what the publisher hashed. It does not tell you the publisher is trustworthy.
Large files take a moment because the whole file has to be read before a digest exists.
